THEY REACHED the ranch just before eight. Bone tired and achy, Taylor could hardly imagine how Zach must be feeling. Of course he hadnât complained. That would be against the cowboy code. What he had done was talk. Mostly about his childhood and how heâd come to love being a cowboy. Of course, he hadnât said it quite that way. But with each anecdote, heâd told of his love for the land, his pride in his stock. his disdain for any life other than his own.
Heâd spoken so eloquently, with such conviction, that sheâd almost found herself wishing she hadnât left her ranch home. Almost.
The reality was that Zachâs stories were only a tiny view into a much broader window. Heâd left out all the awful parts which, she knew from experience, greatly outnumbered the good parts.
But he had reminded her of glorious days. When the air felt as crisp as a Granny Smith apple, and the sky went on forever and ever. When sheâd felt so connected to the land around her, sheâd lost the ability to speak.
That was a long time ago. Remembered through the haze of distance. Exaggerated through dreams and disappointments.
As they stepped into the house and Taylor got a good look at Zach, she could see the pain etched in his face. All she wanted to do now was take a long, hot shower and go to bed. Instead, she turned to Zach. âHey. You think you can manage to take off your clothes by yourself?â
He tried to grin at her, but wasnât very successful. âWhy, is that an offer?â
âYou bet your ass it is.â
He started to reach over with his left hand, presumably to touch her, but the motion was stillborn. âI can manage.â
âThen this is what weâre going to do. You climb into your swim trunks and then toddle out to the hot tub. Iâm going to grab us some food and drink, and Iâll meet you out there.â
âI donât know. Iâm pretty tired. I think Iâm just gonna go lay down.â
âAbsolutely not. If you think youâre sore now, you just ignore it and see what you feel like tomorrow.â
âAll right,â he said. âBut on one condition.â
âWhat?â
âYou climb into that old hot tub with me.â
âTry and stop me. I hurt from here to Sunday. Now, go on. Iâll meet you there.â She left him at the foot of the stairs and headed for the kitchen.
âTaylor.â
She stopped. Turned. âYeah?â
âYou gonna wear that bathing suit you had on the other night?â
She shook her head. âI swear. You men. You could be on your deathbed and youâd still try to look up an angelâs skirt.â
He laughed. Taylor liked that. She went toward the kitchen, and heard Pearlâs voice before she walked through the door to find the older woman with one of Zachâs boys.
âWhat are you doing back so early?â Pearl asked.
âZach had an accident. Donât worry, he seems okay. Just sore. I thought Iâd fix him something to eat. Iâve got him changing so he can get into the hot tub.
