THEY REACHED the ranch just before eight. Bone tired and achy, Taylor could hardly imagine how Zach must be feeling. Of course he hadn’t complained. That would be against the cowboy code. What he had done was talk. Mostly about his childhood and how he’d come to love being a cowboy. Of course, he hadn’t said it quite that way. But with each anecdote, he’d told of his love for the land, his pride in his stock. his disdain for any life other than his own.

He’d spoken so eloquently, with such conviction, that she’d almost found herself wishing she hadn’t left her ranch home. Almost.

The reality was that Zach’s stories were only a tiny view into a much broader window. He’d left out all the awful parts which, she knew from experience, greatly outnumbered the good parts.

But he had reminded her of glorious days. When the air felt as crisp as a Granny Smith apple, and the sky went on forever and ever. When she’d felt so connected to the land around her, she’d lost the ability to speak.

That was a long time ago. Remembered through the haze of distance. Exaggerated through dreams and disappointments.

As they stepped into the house and Taylor got a good look at Zach, she could see the pain etched in his face. All she wanted to do now was take a long, hot shower and go to bed. Instead, she turned to Zach. “Hey. You think you can manage to take off your clothes by yourself?”

He tried to grin at her, but wasn’t very successful. “Why, is that an offer?”

“You bet your ass it is.”

He started to reach over with his left hand, presumably to touch her, but the motion was stillborn. “I can manage.”

“Then this is what we’re going to do. You climb into your swim trunks and then toddle out to the hot tub. I’m going to grab us some food and drink, and I’ll meet you out there.”

“I don’t know. I’m pretty tired. I think I’m just gonna go lay down.”

“Absolutely not. If you think you’re sore now, you just ignore it and see what you feel like tomorrow.”

“All right,” he said. “But on one condition.”

“What?”

“You climb into that old hot tub with me.”

“Try and stop me. I hurt from here to Sunday. Now, go on. I’ll meet you there.” She left him at the foot of the stairs and headed for the kitchen.

“Taylor.”

She stopped. Turned. “Yeah?”

“You gonna wear that bathing suit you had on the other night?”

She shook her head. “I swear. You men. You could be on your deathbed and you’d still try to look up an angel’s skirt.”

He laughed. Taylor liked that. She went toward the kitchen, and heard Pearl’s voice before she walked through the door to find the older woman with one of Zach’s boys.

“What are you doing back so early?” Pearl asked.

“Zach had an accident. Don’t worry, he seems okay. Just sore. I thought I’d fix him something to eat. I’ve got him changing so he can get into the hot tub.
